Glass Digest - June 15, 1989

A 15 foot high sculpture, believed to be the largest outdoor glass sculpture in the world, is the cornerstone of the world headquarters of Monsanto Co. in Creve Coeur, MO. Bonded by Saflex interlayer, a Monsanto product, the sculpture is entitled The Branches of Promise. It is the work of Edwina Sandy, a British artist, and is built of 12 sections of laminated glass, each 2 1/4 inches thick, or about 12 times thicker than an automobile windshield. Each branch consists of five sheets of glass and four sheets of Saflex. The two outer layers of glass are bronze tinted, each a quarter inch thick. The three inner layers are clear glass, each a half inch thick. This kind of multilayer construction is similar to bullet-resistant glass.
